Skin, Hair and Nail Conditions – “Overview”
Healthy hair, skin and nails can indicate one’s overall health. Take nails, for example, that turn yellow when someone has diabetes or a lung disorder, or red nails that could be an indicator of heart disease. Some skin conditions last a lifetime, making it more important to take good care of them. Common problems include eczema, acne, cold sore and Psoriasis.
Hair Loss Conditions
It is normal to lose about 50-100 hairs each day. However if you begin to see bald patches or lots of thinning, you are likely experiencing hair loss. The reasons for hair loss are many. If it occurs suddenly, then the cause may be due to illness, diet, medicine or childbirth. Stress and hormone changes such as menopause are another common cause. Hair loss can be associated with weight loss, an eating disorder, too much vitamin A, or too little protein or iron in your diet. Medications such as blood thinners, birth control pills, anabolic steroids, and many medications that treat high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, or gout can lead to hair loss.
Hair Loss Causes
If hair loss is more gradual and occurs over the course of many years, a person may have hereditary hair loss. Certain hair care practices also can cause noticeable hair loss. The use of hairpins, clips and rubber bands can break hair. Certain products such as bleach or permanents can also cause hair breakage. Blow dryers, flat irons and other devices can also damage hair and contribute to hair loss.
Nail Care Conditions
Treatments include over the counter minoxidil which can be applied to the scalp, oral prescription medications, plus a number of procedures such as hair transplants.
Nail Disorders: are often very noticeable including nail fungus, discoloration, and many other disorders. They can be quite difficult to treat
